Our Story
Nari Gunjan's Journey
The organization has over the years spread out its services to many districts of Bihar and helped thousands of women and children with their work related to education, healthcare, protection of children, empowerment of women and leadership, and other community-based developmental efforts. Programs such as Prerana hostels, Kishori Kendras, and Anand Shiksha Kendras were started to make sure that children and adolescent girls have access to quality education.
Grassroots Effort towards Transformative Social Change
Nari Gunjan, founded in 1987, came into existence with a strong dedication to tackle problems related to marginalized women, children, and the Musahar community of Bihar. Founded on the visionary ideals of social activist Sudha Varghese, the organization initially focused on empowering women who were discriminated against, poor, abused, and socially excluded from the mainstream society. The organization which initially started with the objective of creating awareness among women gradually became a recognized organization working towards equality and education.
Our Story
Even today, Nari Gunjan remains an instrument for social change, empowering women, educating children and building the capacities of marginalized communities in Bihar. The history of our organization is a reflection of many years of commitment to equality, dignity and opportunities for all people who have been marginalized for far too long.
Empowering Girls through Education
At the core of Nari Gunjan’s philosophy lies the issue of education. Through our Prerana Hostels, Kishori Kendras, Anand Shiksha Kendras and other centers, Nari Gunjan offers educational opportunities and life skills development programs to underprivileged children and adolescent girls.
Women’s Empowerment
Working together with marginalized women, Nari Gunjan promotes qualities such as leadership, confidence, knowledge of their rights and economic empowerment. Various trainings, community mobilizations and advocacy initiatives are conducted to make women active members of decision making processes in their families and communities.
Ensuring the Safety and Rehabilitation of Children and Youth
Our child welfare services aim to provide care, education, safety, and rehabilitation for disadvantaged children through residential homes, educational activities, adoption processes, and anti-trafficking projects that will help children flourish in safe and enabling environments.
Promoting Good Health and Well-Being Amongst Communities
Through various health awareness activities, campaigns, health camps, and other community programs, Nari Gunjan is committed to promoting health among communities. Special emphasis is placed on the need to educate marginalized groups such as women, children, senior citizens, and other disadvantaged communities about good health practices.
